This poem was composed by the eminent scholar Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751 AH) and cited in his book Ighāthat al-Lahfān fī Maṣāyid al-Shayṭān (vol. 2, pp. 1063–1064. It forms part of his critique of theological deviations and what he regarded as satanic deceptions in matters of belief and worship. After he mentioned this poem, he says; “Thus it has become clear to every person of reason that Satan has played with this misguided nation in every possible way. He called them, and they responded; he belittled them, and they obeyed him. He toyed with them regarding the matter of the One who is worshipped, exalted be He. And he toyed with them regarding the matter of the Messiah. And he toyed with them regarding the cross and its worship. And he toyed with them regarding the making of images in churches and their worship. You will not find a single one of their churches devoid of an image of Mary and the Messiah, George, Peter, and others among their saints and martyrs.
