Al-Nūniyyah al-Qaḥṭāniyyah is a didactic poem composed in the nūn rhyme, in which the author outlines his creed. The poem consists of approximately 686–690 verses, depending on the edition. It addresses foundational matters of belief, disputed theological issues, the five pillars of Islam, and various subsidiary jurisprudential topics. It also includes extensive passages on manners, ethics, exhortation, and spiritual counsel, all woven together without a rigid thematic structure. The author of this noble poem remains unknown, as no reliable biographical entry for him has been found in the major works of history and biographical literature. It is possible that he composed the poem during a period in which people of innovation and falsehood held influence and authority, prompting him to conceal his identity and suffice with the epithet al-Qaḥṭānī. Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad Sayyid Aḥmad, the teacher at Dār al-Ḥadīth in Mecca, mentions in his introduction to the poem—an introduction concerned solely with ضبط (vocalization), without commentary or explanation—that the poem is attributed to: “The imam, the great scholar, the devout one: Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Qaḥṭānī al-Sulamī al-Mālikī.” Likewise, the author of al-Marjiʿ fī Muʿtaqad Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah (published by Dār al-Kutub al-Islāmiyyah) attributes the poem to: “The eminent scholar Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Qaḥṭānī al-Maghribī al-Andalusī, Abū ʿAbd Allāh.” It is also mentioned in Muʿjam al-Ḥuffāẓ that he was “a jurist and a ḥāfiẓ who authored works,” though no further identifying details are provided. Despite these references, modern scholarly research indicates that there is no definitive or well-established biographical account identifying the author with certainty. While the poem is commonly attributed to “al-Qaḥṭānī al-Andalusī,” there is no conclusive evidence linking it to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Maʿāfirī al-Andalusī or to any other clearly identifiable historical figure. The most plausible conclusion is that the author was an otherwise unknown scholar named ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Qaḥṭānī, whose identity has not been preserved in the surviving biographical tradition. ____________ HELP US RELOCATE MASJID DAAR US SUNNAH – https://dusmasjidappeal.com/ Masjid DaaruSunnah Website: http://dusunnah.com Twitter: / daarussunnah Subscribe to this channel for more content like this, and please give this video a thumbs-up and share it across all social media platforms.
